The traditional method of undertaking journey time surveys using a two-man team with timing points (TPs), stopwatch and paper survey sheets is now a thing of the past.  Northern Link's bluetooth PDA based GPS system allows a single man to undertake journey time surveys with pinpoint accuracy.

Once the route and timing intervals have been determined, all the survey technician has to do is drive the route running the system and the location will be logged into the software.  The logging interval can be set from one second to no upper limit.

Journey time data is collected in longitude and latitude, location, date and time format, and stored in its own unique file.  The data can be viewed in any appropriate mapping software suite.

Journey time data analysis

The collected data files can be analysed through our own macros and a standard data sheet produced showing the TPs, delay time, run time, distance and speed.

In-car journey time video survey service

To complement our journey time surveys, Northern Link can offer an in-car journey time video survey service, allowing the traffic engineer to view the opposing traffic as the route is driven.  So, with the data collected from the journey time survey system and the video survey capture file supplied on DVD, there is a complete service showing the problems incurred on the ever-increasing congested routes in and out of town centres.
