Video traffic surveys

Northern Link offers a wide range of video traffic surveys throughout the UK, including Scotland.  We use high tech equipment, from the latest Sony HQ2 'bullet' camera to long range infra red cameras, together with solid state digital recording and storage media, which enables us to provide the highest levels of data integrity and traceability.

Almost any type of traffic survey can be carried out, at virtually any location, using a variety of video cameras from headcams to mast-mounted and in-vehicle cameras, or even cycle mounted cameras.  High quality video is obtained, meaning vehicle types can be clearly identified even at the largest motorway location.

Whether mast-mounted or in-vehicle, video provides the flexibility to undertake road traffic surveys such as:

  • DfT link based surveys
  • Junction turning counts
  • Roundabout turning counts
  • Queue length
  • Pedestrian movements/behaviour
  • High mast and microdrone surveys
  • Covert video recording
  • Visitor surveys for country parks

Video is also highly suitable for environmental surveys:

  • Cycle paths
  • Canals/rivers
  • Bridleways

The small size of the bullet camera makes it ideal for covert applications such as surveillance of waste management sites, fly tipping, taxi ranks, anti-social behaviour, etc.

Recent additions to the range include a vehicle mounted high mast system, enabling all but the very longest grade separated junctions to be surveyed.  All Northern Link offices also have carbon fibre, GRP and aluminium lightweight masts of varying lengths up to 15m to suit every site.

Analysis

Northern Link also offers a complete data storage and analysis service in order to extract the required information from the traffic survey.  The raw data is stored in an electronic format, ready for later analysis and final presentation in file formats to suit the client's needs.

Still photography

For applications such as junction design, land development, security, etc., we are also able to offer elevated still photography, using a mast or a radio controlled microdrone which operates at heights up to 120m.
